The What and Why of DGs

September 11, 2019

So you’ve driven by Park Hill Baptist Church and thought to yourself, “I wonder what sort of things they do to serve teenagers there?”  Perhaps you have been looking for a church family to join and call home and thought it would be great if they had a strong ministry to students.  Or, maybe your not looking for anything specific but you just want to know how Park Hill Baptist Student Ministry does ministry. Wonder no more! Let me tell you about our DGs; what they are and why they exist!

Before these thoughts move any further, you need to know what the letters DG stand for!  Quite simply, “DG” is short for “Discussion Group.” Brilliant, right?! Each Discussion Group is lead by two genuine, caring adults.  These DG Leaders help facilitate the discussion in each group, but more than that, they are open and committed to loving students and their families well.  They desire to cultivate relationships with each of the students in their DG so that every one of them that comes to be a part of PHBC Student Ministry is known and cared for.

We have some of the most amazing DG Leaders on the planet!  They honor the Lord by cultivating a relationship with your student in a variety of ways.  From a simple “What have you been up to lately?” at the Wednesday night meal before service, to going to some of the extra-curricular activities your student is involved in, to spending time with your student in your home playing a board game, and everything in between.  They desire a relationship with the students in their DG for the purpose of earning the trust needed to guide them toward the next step in their journey of spiritual maturity! The discussions that take place during DG time are critical for spiritual development.

Just as a Life Group’s aim is to provide a safe environment for people of all walks of life to come together to experience shared openness, fellowship, prayer and Bible study, a DG’s aim is much the same.  The goal of each DG is to provide a safe environment for students to consistently meet together for a shared experience of openness to each other and to discussions about faith that lead them to take the next step towards spiritual maturity in Christ.  Those in a DG learn about one another and about how to share their faith. Growth is cultivated as we discuss the message from earlier in the night.

DGs are determined by grade: 7th and 8th graders are together and these are split by gender as well.  9th and 10th, 11th and 12th are together and are co-ed groups. We currently have 5 DGs and will create more as we continue to grow!  One of the strongest reasons for determining DGs this way is that it is easier to facilitate discussions that are tailored for the wide range of students’ age and stage of development.  While 7th and 8th graders need something more concrete, 11th and 12th graders can think more abstractly.

The DG exists because of the vision the Lord is leading us into.  PHBC Student Ministry’s desire is to enable students to seek faith in Christ that lasts a lifetime.  The Discussion Group is one way we hope to achieve that goal!

Let me be the first to invite you to come visit with us this Wednesday night for Student Worship.  We begin at 6:00 and finish at 7:30! Connect with us before-hand to let us know your coming!
